World’s Largest Truck Convoy rolls down Hwy 401 in support of Special athletes
A celebration – a convoy, barbeque, awards ceremony, family entertainment, prize
draws and most importantly, smiling Special Olympics Ontario athletes. On Saturday, September 17,
2016 the 12th annual Ontario World’s Largest Truck Convoy (WLTC) for Special Olympics will be taking
place in Paris, Ontario. The WLTC has become a signature event for the Law Enforcement Torch Run
(LETR) raising over $528,000 for Special Olympics Ontario since 2005.
This unique one-day event in which Law Enforcement officers make dispensation and escort a convoy of
trucks across Highway 401 from Paris, Ontario to London, Ontario to raise awareness for their support of
Special Olympics athletes. “It’s a big hearted trucking community that helps raise the funds and
awareness for the Special Olympics movement,” said Glenn MacDonell, president and CEO of Special
Olympics Ontario. “The athletes and those that benefit from the proceeds look forward to this event
The local leg of the WLTC is part of an international event that has grown since the first convoy with the
Orange County (Florida) Sheriff’s Department in 2001. The WLTC is uniting over 37 American states,
Ontario and three Canadian provinces. “I have seen the impact the convoy has had over the years, not
only on the athletes but with the drivers,” said Tammy Blackwell, event coordinator. “This event and the
relationships between the athletes and the truckers go well beyond just this one day.”
Truckers will traverse at 10:00 a.m. for a total of 120km from Paris, Ontario to Putnam Road in London,
Ontario and back to the Paris Fairgrounds, where there will be various events and activities. Drivers are
expected to return to the Fairgrounds by 1:30 p.m. The public is invited and encouraged to attend the
